NOTICE OF RACE

The Organizing Authority is the Hudson Yacht Club and The International Etchells Canadian Fleet 3.

1 Rules

1.1 This regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing.

1.2 If there is a conflict between languages the English text will take precedence.

2 Advertising

Advertising is permitted under ISAF Regulation 20: Advertising Code

3 Eligibility and Entry

3.1 The regatta is open to all boats of the Etchells Class.

3.2 This regatta is sanctioned by the IECA as a C event

3.3 Eligible boats may enter by completing the registration form and sending it, together with the required fee, to the Hudson Yacht Club by 0900 Friday, August 19th, 2011.

3.3.1Entry Forms will be available at www.hudsonyachtclub.com after July 22^nd, 2011.

3.4 Sail cards and safety equipment, for each boat, may be verified at registration.

3.5 Crew weigh-in may be carried out during registration. The combined weight of crew members of each boat may be posted on the Official Notice Board.

4 Fees

4.1 The entry fee is $60.00 (Cdn) per boat. Boats registering before August 20, 2011 will pay $45.00 (Cdn).

4.2 There will be a dinner on Saturday evening; information and prices will be on the Entry Form.

5 Schedule

5.1 Registration Friday August 26^th, 1600 – 2000 and Saturday August 27^th 0800 - 0900 in the HYC clubhouse.

5.2 Competitors’ briefing 0930 Saturday August 27th in the HYC clubhouse.

5.3 Dates of racing: Saturday August 27th and Sunday August 28^th.

5.4 The number of races scheduled is 7.

5.5 The scheduled time for the warning for the first race Saturday, August 27^th, is 1100 .

5.6 The scheduled time for the warning for the first race on Sunday August 28th will be 1030.

5.7 No warning signal will be displayed after 1330 Sunday August 28^th.

5.8 The awards ceremony will take place as soon as possible after the last race on Sunday

6 Venue

Racing will take place on the Lac des Deux Montagnes

7 Sailing Instructions

Sailing Instructions will be available at registration.

8 The Course

The course to be sailed will be windward - leeward. p; There may be an offset mark, which will set 50-60 meters (approx) to port of the windward mark.

9 Penalty System

Rule 44.1 is changed so that the Two-Turns Penalty is replaced by the One-Turn Penalty.

10 Scoring

10.1. Three races are required to be completed to constitute a series.

10.2 When fewer than 5 races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores.

10.3 When from 5 to 7 races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score.

11 Launch and Haul Out

All boats must be in the water by 0930 Saturday August 27th and shall not be hauled during the regatta except with the prior permission of the Race Committee

12 Prizes

Keeper prizes will be awarded for first through third place.

13 Disclaimer of Liability

Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See rule 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

14 Insurance

Each participating boat shall be insured with third party liability insurance with a minimum cover of $1,000,000 per event or equivalent.

15 Radio Communications

15.1 All boats must carry a marine band VHF radio capable of receiving normal international channels. Boats may use the radio to report retirement from racing or to request assistance in an emergency. No other transmissions are permitted by competing boats. The Race Committee may use the radio to advice competitors of race information.

Canadian Etchells Championship 2011

On July 2-3, historic Pointe Claire Yacht Club on Montreal’s West Island hosted the 2011 Canadian Etchells Championships. Seventeen boats from Vermont, Windsor, Toronto and the Montreal area appeared on Lac St-Louis on Saturday morning jousting for space on the start line.

Saturday brought stupendous sunny weather, but light and shifty winds. Under the expert eye of PRO Madeline Palfreeman and her race committee, 2 races were completed resulting in a tie at the end of Day 1 between Hank Lammens and Jerry O’Brien. That evening, the regatta committee and PCYC hosted a great dinner on the deck overlooking the lake as the sailors relaxed and enjoyed PCYC’s hospitality. They even timed the dinner to have Air France’s ominous and gargantuan Airbus fly over the club during dessert.

On Sunday, better racing conditions greeted the sailors. Winds gradually built in the morning and peaked in the 10-knot range, allowing 4 races to be completed before the 1400 hrs deadline. The racing was close, the leaderboard was in constant flux, but at the end of the day Hank Lammens, with crew Dirk Kneulman and J. Clark were victorious (these guys finally seem to be getting the hang of the boat). Second place honours went to Jerry O’Brien, D. Nuttial and B. Boston and the third place finishers were Allan Leibel, M. Wren and B. McFarlane

In truth, the real winners were the members of Montreal’s Fleet 3, who had the opportunity to race against superb competition and meet their fellow Etchells Sailors. Thanks go out to PCYC for being such gracious hosts, to Regatta Chair Dave Covo and his committee for their organizational excellence, and to Madeline Palfreeman and the Race Committee for setting fair courses in sometimes difficult conditions. Thanks also to all the sponsors who helped make the event possible, including title sponsor Ye Olde Orchard Pub.

3.1 The regatta is open to all boats of the International Etchells Class. This regatta is sanctioned by the International Etchells Class Association as a C event.

3.2 Eligible boats may enter by completing the entry form and sending it, with the required fee, to Pointe Claire Yacht Club by June 1st, 2011.

3.3 Late entries will be accepted until 0900 hrs, Saturday, July 2, but late entrants will be required to pay a Late Entry Fee.

3.4 Sail cards and safety equipment, for each boat, will be verified at registration.

3.5 Crew weigh-in will be carried out during registration. The combined weight of crew members of each boat may be posted on the Official Notice Board.

4 FEES

The entry fee will be $195 (Cdn) per boat. Boats registering after June 1st, 2011, will be required to pay a Late Entry Fee of $225 (Cdn).

5 SCHEDULE

5.1 Registration: Friday, July 1, 1600-2100 hrs, and Saturday, July 2, 0800-0900 hrs

5.2 Measurement and inspection: Friday, July 1, 0900-2100 hrs, and Saturday, July 2, 0800-0900 hrs

5.3 Competitors’ briefing: Saturday, July 2, 0900 hrs

5.4 Dates of racing: Saturday, July 2, and Sunday, July 3

5.5 Seven races are scheduled.

5.6 The scheduled time of the warning signal for the first race on Saturday, July 2, is 1030 hrs. No warning signal will be displayed after 1400 Sunday, July 3. The awards ceremony will take place as soon as possible after the last race on Sunday.

5.7 There will be a dinner on Saturday evening. Information and prices are on the Entry Form.

6 MEASUREMENT

Each boat shall produce a sail card and a valid Hull and Spar measurement certificate at registration.

7 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

The sailing instructions will be available at registration.

8 VENUE

Racing will take place on Lac Saint-Louis.

9 THE COURSES

Windward-leeward courses will be sailed.

10 PENALTY SYSTEM

10.1 For infringements of a rule of Part 2 while racing, the Two-Turns Penalty is replaced by the One-Turn Penalty, except that for infringements occurring within the Zone, the penalty will be the Two-Turns Penalty. This changes RRS 44.1.

10.2 A boat that has taken a penalty or retired shall complete an acknowledgement form at the race office within the protest time limit.

11 SCORING

11.1 Three races shall be completed to constitute a series.

11.2 When fewer than 5 races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores. When 5 or more races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score.

12 BERTHING

Boats will be assigned places in the harbour.

13 HAUL-OUT RESTRICTIONS

All boats must be in the water by 0930 hrs, Saturday, July 2nd, and shall not be hauled during the regatta except with the prior permission of the Race Committee.

14 RADIO COMMUNICATION

All boats must carry a marine band VHF receiver capable of receiving normal international channels. Boats must use the radio to report retirement from racing and may use the radio to request assistance in an emergency. No other communications are permitted by boats from the first Warning Signal of the day until the end of the last race of the day. The Race Committee may use the radio to advise competitors of race information.

15 PRIZES

The Canadian Etchells Championship perpetual trophy will be awarded to the winning crew. Keeper prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place.

16 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See RRS 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

17 INSURANCE

Pointe Claire Yacht Club and Canadian Fleet 3 are proud to be hosting the International Etchells Canadian Championship Regatta on July 2nd and 3rd, 2011.

PCYC is the oldest yacht club in the Montreal area and well known as a great racing venue with a long tradition of excellence in the management of national and international events. The club is centrally located on the shores of Lac Saint-Louis, just 10 minutes from the airport and an easy 30 minute drive from downtown Montreal.

If you are looking for the perfect reason to visit Montreal, this is it: 2 days of great racing complemented by the shore-side hospitality of PCYC, Fleet 3, and the village of Pointe Claire. Quebec Champs: Brian Palfreeman Memorial Trophy

Our first regatta of the year is fast approaching, The Quebec Champs are scheduled at HYC on June 5th & 6th. The Championship Trophy will be renamed the Brian Palfreeman Memorial Trophy, to honour Brian's commitment to the Fleet. I hope to see everyone at HYC for the first presentation of the trophy.

Scott informs me that there are still a couple members who have not paid their 2010 dues, don't forget all skippers must be paid up to compete in sanctioned events.

"Good bye Brian, farewell my friend."

To all sailors,

As many of you know by now, our friend and fellow Etchells racer Brian passed away last sunday. Louis B. asked me to write a few words about Brian as I knew him very well throughout the years of racing both with and against him and I am honored to do so.

It is always difficult to write about some one in situations like these and I wonder if I am up to the task of writing about a great man, but here goes anyway...

I have known Brian since joining PCYC around 30 years ago. I was a Fireball racer back then, and Brian was already a well known champion around the club. It was about 1988 that I bought my first keelboat, a Kirby 25 that I finally got acquainted more personnally with Brian, mainly through the Hudson annual dock parties on his Mega 30 and because of Mark, his son, who became a good friend of mine (and excellent party animal!). The years went by, and so did Brian's victories in PHRF and all that time Brian would always volunteer some wise advice after the race with his tongue in cheek style.

In 1995, I sold my Kirby to start my brewpub in Tremblant. Sylvie and I soon became Brian's crew and we sailed through to 2003 with him. About 5 years on the Mega, and then two more on the Etchells. There was never a single moment of yelling or panic aboard Brian's boats and always a good lunch provided by Mado. Sailing with Brian was always a relaxing experience and I had the chance to observe this master up close. What I learnt from him was to stay focused on basics, nothing fancy. Keep the boat moving with proper sail trim, make quick decisions on the game plan and stick to it, and in close encounters with doubtfull results, be a gentleman and let the other boat through (we'll get them later...).

The rest is history, a bunch of us bought a number of Etchells in 2003 and 2004 to build the actual PCYC fleet, and to this date Brian and crew were always a force to be dealt with. This fleet would never of happened without him.

Of course there is so much more to Brian than what I just wrote. I recall many long warm conversations with Brian and Mado during those endless hours of waiting for wind that us racers are so familiar with. My own dad passed away in 2000, and I felt a special bond with Brian building since then. He always had kind words for me and always took the time to stop by and say hello and chat about all and nothing. He was a genuine kind soul, the type of guy I would like to be.

I am not afraid to admit I loved him very much, and I feel as if my own dad has just passed away again. Brian has helped me become a better sailor, and more importantly, a better person.

I am sure you all join me in saying: "Good bye Brian, farewell my friend."

Etchells Fleet 3 AGM 2010

On Tuesday January 5, Montreal’s Fleet 3 Etchells sailors gathered at Clyde’s in Pointe Claire to usher in the New Year, furtively watch two hockey games, and conduct their Annual General Meeting. Attendance was at an all-time high, due either to the free beer and wings, or to the presence of special guest and Montreal Sailing blogger extraordinaire Ralph Stocek, or to the fact that the Montreal Etchells fleet enjoyed perhaps the most successful year in its history.

Highlights of 2009 included the Etchells Canadians, which were hosted at Hudson Yacht Club as part of HYC’s 100^th anniversary celebrations and drew boats from Montreal, Toronto and Lake Champlain; the Quebec Championships, which were held at Pointe Claire Yacht Club in mid-June and won by Pierre Jasmin and crew on Vivace, and HYC’s Labour Day regatta, in which 11 Etchells competed, with CAN 1089’s Scott Lawrence and crew taking both line honours and first place on corrected time at Saturday’s Long Distance race.

At the AGM, Fleet Captain Allan Gray outlined some of the local Etchells regattas for 2010, which will include the Quebec Championships, to be held in Hudson at the beginning of June, and the Lac St. Louis Challenge Cup, which will be held later in the summer at PCYC. A special effort will be made this year to get some of the sailors from the Lake Champlain fleet up for these events.

Other regattas in the planning stages include a Ryder/Americas’ Cup challenge involving the Montreal and Toronto fleets—a new event that will combine two days of team golf and two days of match racing—and a CanAm challenge between Montreal and Burlington fleets.

Fleet 3 also officially welcomed its newest member, Stephane Arsenault, who is sailing out of Pointe-Claire, and tried to confirm rumours that there would soon be another boat appearing at the start Mark in Hudson….

The Fleet is also planning another get-together this winter at David Lowther’s country place in the Laurentians—a day of skiing followed by a pot-luck dinner and a racing rules quiz. Hopefully we can get this organized for the end of February.

8. Penalty System

The Penalty for breaking a rule of Part 2 shall be a One Turn Penalty (one tack and one gybe in the same direction) except that for infringements occurring within the Zone, as defined in the current RRS, the penalty shall be Two Turn Penalty (two tacks and two gybes in the same direction). This changes RRS 44.1 and 44.2

9. Scoring.

9.1. Four (4) races are required to be completed to constitute a series.

9.2 When 5 or fewer races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores.

9.3 When 6 races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score.

10. Launch and Haul Out.

All boats must be in the water by 0930 Saturday July 11^th and shall not be hauled during the regatta except with the prior permission of the Race Committee

11. Prizes.

The Quebec Championship trophy will be awarded to the winner.

12. Disclaimer of Liability

13. Insurance

Each participating boat shall be insured with third party liability insurance with a minimum cover of $1,000,000 per event or equivalent.

Annual Membership Fees

Hi Everyone—

Well, it’s that time of year again, so I’m sending along the membership forms. Please note that the national fees have increased slightly for both skippers and crew members, though the local fees have stayed the same. Note as well that crew members must be members of the association in order to qualify to sail in the Canadians! And finally, National would like to have all fees by April 15, so if you could get them to me by April 12 I would appreciate it.

Ten degrees today—the water is getting softer by the minute…

Also, a bit of news on the Canadians—on Saturday night we will be hosting a jam session at HYC, featuring a house band with some of the fleet members on guitar, drums, and perhaps sax (?), and it appears that even Dirk may be bringing along an instrument. So if any of you have a hidden musical talent (or even not so hidden), let me know and we’ll be sure to get you set up…..

Etchells Ice Party (this Saturday)

Hi everybody,
Looking forward to a big Etchells ice party on Saturday.

I did an ice check this afternoon. The ice is nice and hard now with
the cold weather we had today and to continue Thursday and Friday.
Saturday looks great!

Hope you can come in large numbers, include kids, grandparents, crew
and friends. Pass the word on. Bring skates, hockey sticks, ice
fishing gear (I have an auger) and any other toys. I have also rigged
the DN ice boat and its ready to go for anyone to use. (Might even rig
the Renegade but thats a big job. Any volunteers?) Possibly some of
the other DNers may show up, invitation sent. My son we do a remote
controlled air-plane demonstration.

Don't worry about getting cold as we are only a few steps away from
the house and a cozy wood stove. We'll have a big pot of chilly ready
for dinner.

NOTICE OF RACE

The Organizing Authority is the Hudson Yacht Club and The International Etchells Canadian Fleet 3.

1. Rules

1.1This regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in the 2009-2012 Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS).

1.2 The rules and regulations of the International Etchells Class Association will apply except as modified by the Sailing Instructions.

1.3 If there is a conflict between languages, the English text will prevail.

1.4 If there is a conflict between rules or regulations, other than the RRS, the sailing Instructions

will prevail.

2. Advertising

Advertising is permitted under ISAF Regulation 20: Advertising Code

3. Eligibility and Entry

3.1 The regatta is open to all boats of the Etchells Class.

3.2 This regatta is sanctioned by the IECA as a B event

3.3 Eligible boats may enter by completing the registration form, together with the required fee and submitting it to the Organizing Authority before 1000 June 5^th, 2009.

3.4 Sail cards and safety equipment, for each boat, will be verified at registration.

3.5 Crew weigh- in will be done during registration. The combined weight of crew members of each boat may be posted on the Official Notice Board.

4. Fees

4.1 The required entry fee is $195. cdn. per boat.

4.2 Late entry fee will be $225. cdn. for entries received after May 24^th

4.3 Entry fee includes 3 dinner tickets.

5. Schedule

5.1 Registration Thursday June 4^th 1600 – 2000 and Friday June 5^th 0800- 1000 in the HYC clubhouse.

5.2 Competitor’s briefing 1000 June 5th in the HYC clubhouse

5.3 Dates of racing: Friday June 5th to Sunday June 7

5.4 The number of races scheduled is 9.

5.5 The scheduled time for the warning for the first race Friday June 5^th 1230

5.6 The scheduled time for the warning for the first race Saturday June 6^th, and Sunday June 7^th will be 1030

5.7 No warning signal will be displayed after 1330 Sunday June 7^th

5.8 The awards ceremony will take place as soon as possible after the last race on Sunday
